The Red Sox finally got back into the friendly confines of Fenway Park on Tuesday afternoon. And what a day it was. Not only did they receive their World Series rings in front of an adoring crowd, but they also picked up a 5-0 victory over the struggling Detroit Tigers.
Leading the way was Dice-K Matsuzaka. The Red Sox starter went 6.2 innings allowing just four hits (all singles) and striking out seven. Again, Matsuzaka established hsi fastball early and went after hitters. The result was a far more economical pitcher in the early innings. A year ago, Matsuzaka saw his pitch count climb high in the early innings of many games. Although he did walk four batters he was able to avoid allowing the Toger bats to wake up and take advantage. Manny Delcarmen and Hideki Okajima pitched the final 2.1 innings to wrap up the victory. Matsuzaka is now 2-0 with a 1.47 era.
The bats didn't tear the cover off of the ball, but Kevin Youkilis had three hits and drove in two runs. Manny Ramirez had a triple to knock in another. Coco Crisp drove in a run with a sac fly and J. D Drew earned a bases loaded walk. Youkilis raised his early season batting average to .400 while Drew had a single in three at bats and holds a .368 batting average.
The series continues tomorrow evening with Jon Lester taking the mound against Detroit's Jeremy Bonderman.
