Dustin Pedroia won the AL MVP award Tuesday, becoming the first second baseman to earn the honor in nearly a half-century. Nellie Fox was the last second baseman to become AL MVP, in 1959 with the White Sox.
Pedroia drew 16 of the 28 first-place votes cast by members of the Baseball Writers' Association of America and finished with 317 points. Boston's Kevin Youkilis finished third in the voting behind Minnesota's Justin Morneau.
It was an odd year in MVP voting in the American League with five players receiving first place votes. While Pedroia did not have eye popping offensive numbers, nor did anyone else receiving a first place vote, he led the league in hits, runs an doubles while batting .326 with 17 homers and 83 runs batted in. He also added 20 stolen bases on the season. He became the driving force behind Bostons' run to the post-season.
It's a well deserved reward for Pedroia, who won the American League Rookie of The Year Award last season and also added a World Seris ring. This season the 25-year-old Pedroia became just the eighth player in AL history to earn MVP, Gold Glove and Silver Slugger awards in the same season.
